Isao Maruoka’s Pixia software application for Windows is a painting and image editing tool. If you get started with a blank canvas, you can use Pixia to come up with an interesting drawing. And if you choose to load an existing image into Pixia, you can edit it and thus make it look interesting.

The system requirements for running Pixia are: Windows operating system (32- or 64-bit; Windows 7 and newer); at least 32MB of RAM (as much as possible recommended); at least 800x600 screen resolution, High or True Color; pressure sensitive tablet (optional).

Pixia is available as an installer for Windows and as a plug-in for Photoshop. The installer is available in English, Korean, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional). But please note that apart from the English edition, all other editions are no longer updated because the author finds it hard to maintain all editions.

The interface is just what you would expect from an application of this type. So if you’ve used editing/drawing tools in the past, you’ll find the interface very familiar and you will quickly get accustomed to it. If you want to customize Pixia’s interface, go to the View menu; from there you can pick and choose what elements are displayed on the interface.

You can do a lot with Pixia: start with a blank canvas, load an existing image, or acquire an image from a camera or scanner; draw freehand; tweak and customize the freehand drawing tool; there’s a useful undo/redo function; layers are supported; flip, rotate image; add custom text to the image; adjust the colors, adjust the contrast; apply one of many filters; multiple formats are supported for the output; and more.

Pixia is free software. It may be used in any form, except for sale purposes.

There’s much to like about Pixia: it has a familiar layout, it provides easy access to drawing and image editing tools, it is free. Overall, Pixia is a very useful painting and image editing tool.

Pros

The system requirements for running Pixia are quite low. The interface has a familiar layout; you can pick and choose what elements are displayed on the interface. Use Pixia to draw something on a blank canvas, use Pixia to edit an image. Pixia is free software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
